La Moldavie est l’ancienne République Soviétique Socialiste de Moldavie devenue indépendante le 27 août 1991. Située entre la Roumanie et l’Ukraine c’est un petit pays de moins de 5 millions d’habitants. Si l’on débatait sur l’appartenance à l’Europe de la Moldavie par rapport à sa situation géographique et culturelle, il n’y aurait aucun doute. La République de Moldova, de culture latine risque pourtant d’être oubliée entre l’Est et l’Ouest. Essayons donc de mieux connaitre la Moldavie souvent carricaturée.

Formerly part of Romania, Moldova was incorporated into the Soviet Union at the close of World War II. Although independent from the USSR since 1991, Russian forces have remained on Moldovan territory east of the Dniester River supporting the Slavic majority population, mostly Ukrainians and Russians, who have proclaimed a "Transnistria" republic. The poorest nation in Europe, Moldova became the first former Soviet state to elect a Communist as its president in 2001.
